How Animals Can Help Improve Soil

Animals can help regenerate soil to provide an optimum growing environment for organic gardens.

Here are some of the benefits of having a variety of animals on your farm:
  • By using regenerative land management that incorporates livestock, you can increase organic matter in the soil back to healthy levels within a couple of decades (like we have done here on our farm).
  • By urinating and defecating on the land, livestock provide important nourishment for soil microbes. Their hooves also help break up hardened topsoil, allowing grass seed to take root.
  • Good animal welfare includes creating an environment in which the animals can express instinctive behavior. Cows were born to roam and graze. Chickens were born to scratch and peck.
Instead of using chemicals to artificially 'enhance' soil conditions and improve crop yield, try bringing animals into the mix to help control pests, provide natural fertilization and regenerate dead soil.
